Riverside Apartments Στην Βασιλική της Λευκάδας

History

Lefkada is the only island in Greece that is accessible to visitors by car. It is located very close to the Greek mainland, near the tip of Aetolia-Acarnania, to which it is connected by a 25-meter-long floating bridge.

Lefkada, or Lefkas as it was known in ancient times, gets its name from the white rocks that decorate its world-famous beaches. Lefkada is the fourth-largest among Greece’s Ionian islands, and is its own Prefecture, encompassing the neighboring islets of Skorpios, Skorpidi, Madouri, Kythros, etc.

As one enters the island, they will see the imposing Caste of Agia Mavra, which was built by the Venetians in the 13th century. After evidence discovered from archaeological digs, many researchers now believe Lefkada to be the real Ithaca – homeland of the crafty and wily Homeric hero Odysseus.

The fames white Cape of Lefkata (known today as Doukato) is located on the southern tip of the island. The temple of Apollo was situated on this tip, and according to tradition, the poet Sappho threw herself off its cliff and into the sea over her unrequited love for the ferryman Phaon.
